Intensive Survey of Historical and Architectural Sites

The City of Monona was awarded a $24,000 grant from the Wisconsin Historical Society to undertake a community-wide intensive survey of historical and architectural sites. The grants, formally known as the "Historic Preservation Fund (HPF) subgrants" are administered by the Wisconsin State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO). At the federal level, the program is managed by the National Park Service (NPS).  The HPF is funded by federal offshore oil leases, not tax revenues. Only Certified Local Governments are eligible for this grant. Monona achieved its CLG designation in 2018 and has just completed administration of this first grant for the architectural survey project.

The Landmarks Commission selected the firm Mead & Hunt to carry out the survey project in Summer 2018. The architectural survey project was completed in July 2019, with a public presentation held on August 28, 2019. A digital copy of the report can be found below, two paper copies are also available at the City of Monona Library.
