Monona's waste and recycling collection provider is Waste Management (Advanced Disposal was purchased by Waste Management). All trash and recycling must be placed in city-owned carts (grey carts for trash; blue carts for recycling) and taken to the curb by 7:00 A.M. for collection on your collection day. To contact Waste Management, call 1-888-960-0008.
Monona is divided into two districts for collection of waste and recycling. Waste is collected every week, on Tuesday or Wednesday, depending on where you live. Recycling is collected on the same day as your waste collection, but recycling is collected every other week.
To see your collection days, please view a LISTING BY STREET & CALENDAR.
If a major holiday falls on your collection day, or in the case of bad weather, collection may be delayed by a day. Sign up in our Notify Me center to receive an email for any changes to the usual collection schedule.
Trash Collection Requirements
All garbage must fit in your grey cart with the lid closed; waste set beside the cart will not be collected.
Keep 3 feet of clearance between your cart and other objects (trees, parked cars, mailboxes, etc.).
Arrows on the lid should point toward the street.
Trash to be placed in the cart includes bagged garbage and food waste, mixed trash, ceramics, Styrofoam, and other loose trash. Place all lightweight or Styrofoam trash in a bag near the top of your cart to ensure that your cart fully empties.
Did you know that there are many items that are banned from Wisconsin landfills? Click here to learn more about these banned items. See the links in the "More Information" box (at right) for information on disposing of these items.
If your garbage cart is damaged and needs replacement, please call City Hall at 222-2525. Replacement cost for carts not damaged by the garbage truck is $65.
If you’d like to purchase an additional garbage cart or you need a special pick up for extra trash or large items that do not fit into your cart, please contact Waste Management directly at 1-888-960-0008. There are additional charges for these services.
Household Hazardous Waste
To safely and properly dispose of household hazardous waste, please take them to Dane County’s Clean Sweep. Household Hazardous Waste includes paints, stains unusable gasoline, other household chemicals, and household e-waste.
Waste collection districts 1 and 2 above are also divided into an A and B week for collection of recycling, as recycling is collected every other week. Download a calendar of recycling pick-up for the year by clicking here.
To help you recycle right, you can download and print out a helpful one page flyer with Monona's recycling guidelines to hang on your fridge.
Items That Can Be Recycled
All of the following items can be placed directly into your blue recycling cart. Items do not need to be separated. Extra recyclable items will be collected if they are are bagged in a clear plastic bag and placed next to your recycling cart.
