This is the Monona News for the fourth week of February.
The 2012 elections start this week in Monona. On Tuesday, voters
will narrow the field for Judge in a primary election for the Circuit
Court Branch 11. The incumbent, Roger Allen faces challenges from two
others, Francis Sullivan and Ellen Berz, and the two candidates with
the most votes will appear on the ballot in April. The primary is run
the same way as the general election. The voter id law is now in
effect, and all voters must bring a valid id and sign the poll book.
Monona has two polling places, the Community Center for residents of
the southern half of the City, and St Stephens Church for residents of
the northern half. We'll have results on the Monona News next week.
In other election news, the number of candidates for Monona City
Council also narrowed last week. Alderman Jeff Wiswell Sr. announced
that he was withdrawing from the election. Wiswell cited personal
reasons and other obligations explaining his decision to step out of
the running. Just two weeks ago Alderman Dennis Kugle also announced
that he was withdrawing from the race as well. That means there are
now three individuals running for the three council seats: Mary
O’Connor, Kathy Thomas and Brian Holmquist. The spring election is
April 3rd.
The Monona Transit Commission is seeking public input on how to best
expand the Monona Bus service. The Monona City Council approved
funding to add 14 additional hours each week, and the Transit
Commission wants to know how to best use these funds to attract new
riders. Possible options would include adding stops at Madison Area
Hospitals, or adding an extra loop. If you are interested in
providing input, a survey is available at City Hall. You can fill it
out and the 28th at City Hall, to speak before the Transit Commission.
Members of the committee would like to thank you in advance for your
input.
Finally this week, well leave you with music from last weeks Pops
concert. Have a great
week.
