Monona News Update 1/30-2/6

Date: 01/30/2012

This is the Monona News for the first week of February.

Monona Community Cable had a busy Wednesday last week.  At Glacial
Drumlin, the Monona Grove School Board had several presentations at
their monthly board meeting.   Two of the presentations involved ways
the district is developing its continuous assessment program.  The
district discovered by comparing various standardized tests that state
standards on one were well below Monona Grove's.  A second
presentation showed how the process continues to update and new data
comes forward.  The board was also updated on a Mentoring Program for
new teachers, and several other staff members explained the impact of
increased class sizes.  The meeting is available online at
mononatv.com.

Also last Wednesday the Monona Planning Commission got its first look
at a plan for a new shelter in Firemans' Park.  The park director
explained how the original plan was to construct two buildings, a new
shelter and a new concession stand, but bids on the project last year
were higher then expected.  The park board decided to merge the two
into a single building, and presented the initial proposal last week.
The planning commission asked several questions about the effect of
crowds on the neighborhood, and will further consider the proposal at
a future meeting.

Finally last Wednesday, Monona Community Cable taped the 5th Energize
Monona presentation at the Community
Center.   Energ!ze Monona is a series of six free forums developed in
Monona’s  “25x25 Plan.”   The goal is to generate 25 percent of the
city's energy from renewable resources by 2025.  Last weeks
presentation focused on how
both water availability and water quality are critical for community
security and health.   The sixth and final Energize Monona will be on
February 18th.  If you would like to see last weeks presentation, or
any of the meetings we taped, watch for rebroadcasts of them all this
week on Monona Community Cable.

In other news, the Monona Senior Center is now taking appointments for
AARP tax clinics. Appointments are available between 8:30 am  and
11:00 am, and each appointment lasts about 30 minutes.  If you go, you
need to bring your 2011 tax return, along with other necessary
documents, such as those received from banks, IRAs or Social Security.
Just call 222-3415 to make your appointment.

Finally this week, if you would like some advice on how to each Your
Child Financial Literacy, come to the Library this Tuesday at 6.
Robin Vance from Monona State Bank, and a former preschool teacher,
will provide practical strategies and tips to promote better savings
habits for families and especially kids ages 4 to 8. The class will be
filled with activities to promote hands-on learning between parents
and their children. The event is free, but please sign up ahead of
time at www.mononalibrary.org or by calling 222-6127.

Have a great week.
